History of Tennessee Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Academy (TBJJA)

Founded in 2009
Tennessee Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Academy (TBJJA) was established in 2009, originally in the small town of Neapolis, TN. The vision was clear: to bring the transformative power of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) to the people of Middle Tennessee. As the academy quickly grew, the founders realized that a move to Spring Hill would better serve the surrounding communities of Williamson and Maury counties. In doing so, TBJJA became the first Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu academy in Spring Hill, and it proudly pioneered BJJ in the area.

Founders: Ray & Rachel Casias
The heart and soul of TBJJA lie in its founders, Ray and Rachel Casias. Ray, a 4th-degree black belt, has a rich martial arts background, with experience in wrestling, Karate, and Taekwondo. Before fully dedicating himself to TBJJA, Ray co-founded Middle Tennessee’s first MMA school, The Fighter’s Guild. His passion for Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu ultimately led him to focus on building TBJJA into the powerhouse it is today.

Rachel, a 3rd-degree black belt, transitioned from a successful career in law to pursue her true passion—teaching and competing in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. A multi-time Masters World and Pan American champion, Rachel has built a reputation as one of the most accomplished competitors in the sport. Together, Ray and Rachel have created a gym that is not only a competitive powerhouse but also a welcoming environment for practitioners of all ages and skill levels.

Growth & Expansion
What began as a small operation has blossomed into one of Middle Tennessee’s premier martial arts academies. TBJJA’s growth has been driven by its unwavering commitment to excellence in instruction and a community-based approach to training. The academy now boasts a large student base, attracting everyone from local hobbyists to high-level competitors. As the demand for quality BJJ instruction increased, TBJJA expanded its facilities to meet the needs of its growing family.

Even with its success, TBJJA has never lost sight of its roots. The academy continues to evolve, embracing modern training techniques while preserving the core principles of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Its commitment to staying at the forefront of the sport ensures that students receive the most effective and up-to-date instruction.

Community & Impact
TBJJA has played a significant role in shaping the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and martial arts community in Spring Hill and beyond. The academy is known for producing high-level competitors while maintaining an inclusive and supportive environment. Whether you’re training to compete or simply looking for a rewarding way to stay fit, TBJJA provides a path to success for every student.

The culture at TBJJA is built on respect, discipline, and personal growth, with a strong emphasis on fostering a family-friendly atmosphere. From the youngest children to adult competitors, all students are treated like family, creating a tight-knit and supportive environment that extends beyond the mats.

Legacy & Future
As TBJJA continues to grow, its mission remains clear: to spread the art of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu throughout Middle Tennessee and beyond. The academy’s unwavering dedication to quality instruction, competition success, and strong community ties has earned it a reputation as one of the top Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu schools in the region. With its founders at the helm and a bright future ahead, TBJJA is poised to continue shaping the future of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu for years to come.
